D.N. Carrington letter : New York, N.Y., to R.R. Carrington, San Francisco, Calif., 1851 May 12.

Handwritten letter giving details of steamer business transactions in New York. Details include: preparations made for outfitting the ship Crescent City possibly for troop transport on sealed orders from the federal government. The order to sail was countermanded before departing. The author speculates that the ship was prepared either to interrupt a Cuban expedition or to land troops in Charleston, S.C. to deter secessionist actions in South Carolina taken in May of 1851. Other details include: the price competing carriers were charging to carry passengers ($10 for steerage, $30 to $40 for cabin), sending a "gold washer" to help in finding gold, and details of a Colt instruments shipment.
